Targeted at professional software developers, this book provides a deep insight into Apache Axis, an open source framework for developing Web service applications on the Java platform.

After short introductions of basic technologies like SOAP, WSDL, UDDI and JAX-RPC, the book focuses solely on application development using Axis. Beginning with the installation of the Axis framework, the authors guide you through the complete development process. Detailed examples cover every aspect of developing services and clients, including topics like deployment and debugging.

Further important topics are the internal architecture of Axis, its configuration and how the framework can be extended with application-specific functionalities using handlers or providers. Of course, the book also covers the topic interoperability, i.e. the interaction of Axis-based services and clients with other environments like Microsoft .NET. A complete chapter deals with the advantages and disadvantages of the different SOAP message styles.
